In reviewing the direction and clear strengths of your sustainability charter, as a community you may want to consider becoming the first 'One Planet Community' outside of an urban area on the globe.
The One Planet Community has created an excellent framework embodies the same principles as the our BC sustainability consultants are using - Natural Step, Smart Growth, 8 Pillars, Healthy Communities while raising the bar in achievable targets that are a model for the rest of the world.
Check it out! Joining this network and adopting this level of targets in the Sustainability Target could allow Powell River to be at the forefront of self-reliance in BC, Canada and throughout the World.
It is amazing to see that your community is weaving 'governance' through the 4 pillars the Charter is working on.
Another thread that is critical at this ADAPTABILITY & RESILIENCE - these threads tend to be missing in most of the sustainability plans in B.C. and yet they are key in ensuring longevity of a community.
The Action Climate Team at SFU http://www.sfu.ca/act/ has written several amazing white papers that are very relevant to the day to day operations of what is happening on the ground.
You may want to have your new consultant review these papers and perhaps even get engaged in this conversation.
Most of us working in the sustainability focus on mitigation (carbon footprint) and little on adaptation and resiliency. Yet the provincial and national climatologists, meterologists and biologists are all working with this.
As is Europe - who are moving away from mitigation to adaptation as they recognize the rate of change is faster than we can mitigate to.
